We all love watching our favourite riders, family and friends race, it doesn’t matter if it’s a club, a National Championship or a World Cup. But there are some unsung heroes of these events, the amazing volunteers who offer up their time to make all of our favourite events a possibility. If it wasn’t for them, they wouldn’t be possible.

Ahead of the Brisbane Track World Cup in December this year we had a chat with Pat Kerlin, a Queensland local and one of the best cycling volunteers around to find out why he loves volunteering, some of his favourite events and what he would say to people thinking about helping out.

How long have you been volunteering for?

“Nine years, since my son started racing in the under 13s on both road and track. I got involved to not only help my child, but assist others at club, State & National races. The club or Cycling Queensland would ask for volunteers and I was more than happy to help out.”

Why did you start volunteering and what keeps you coming back?

“I enjoy the fast-paced, energy-charged environment that is track racing. It’s great being close to the action and thinking, “I’m part of this!

“I have got to know event organisers, commissaires and other volunteers, who are all great people to get on with and we all have the same goal, to achieve the best outcome. Whether it’s a junior at a club race or an elite rider from another country, the aim is to get them to the start line relaxed and ready to perform for their events.”

What had been your favourite event?

“Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, where I worked in a small team whose main role was to operate the starting gates and also look after the riders needs.”

What would you say to someone thinking about getting involved with volunteering?

“Get involved, it’s not hard, you can do as little or as much as you want or capable of, it feels good to contribute and see the results via big smiles and appreciation from those that have benefited from your time.”

Pat will be helping out in Brisbane at the Anna Meares Velodrome for the Track World Cup from December 13 to 15.
